Hi guys, if you haven't seen the results of the first icon-voting experiment, visit here. That experiment had you comparing icons to see which are nicest, then relating that to the number of sponsor views the icon got. The short answer is: yes, the quality of your icon definitely affects how many sponsor views you'll get!

But there were many questions and issues arising from that experiment, so I ended the experiment a bit early so we can try to address them. These are the improvements:

  • Shows icons AND titles (formatted as they are shown in daily emails, with the title over the icon)
  • Uses a new scoring algorithm based on the Elo chess-ranking algorithm, in addition to the previous algorithm
  • Lets you say that two games are a "tie"
  • Lets you easily skip over games if you feel like you won't be objective in voting on them (such as if you love the game, or really hate it)
  • The results screen will let you play the games (if the developer has given you permission to view that game)
  • Fewer bugged icons will show up, as we no longer let you vote on the leftover icons from deleted games (!)

Please go vote on some games!

Assuming all goes well, we'll let this run for a bit longer and try to drum up more support for it in various places.

Ye, I think the tie feature will really change the high scores. Because before, when their was to really good icons, one had to be loosing.

Voted a ton of them, definitely more interesting with the additional options to play with and titles. I think I voted slightly differently for a small percentage of them due to titles making the point of the icon image more clear.

That angry goldfish seems to come up pretty often... not sure if it's just a random artifact or maybe the game is in the system multiple times?

Would be interesting to record time taken over each decision - cut out the longest 10% to eliminate people who got distracted and did something else instead of picking...

That would identify pairings where people had a clear and instant preference vs having to think about it somewhat.

I predict the obvious - there will be less icons with titles at the top.

Now that the title is right next to the icon (as it should be in most places), my appreciation of cool fonts inside the icon dropped significantly.

Just finished voting for a bunch. I don't think I read a single title before picking the more alluring icon and that's certainly because the vast majority of attractive icons contain the title. The last experiment already proved this point.

None of my own icons feature the title in them either, something I'm probably going to change moving forward.

Very good point my Pjbaron, was thinking about it myself aswell.

How much peoples do read the titles? Here and in "the wild"

Would it be possible to make pages that resemble "the wild" more, Like 50 icons on a page and us clicking on the ones we would possibly play. Because now it is very much a 1 vs 1 thingy where we quickly look at how interresting they are. But on a 50 icons page you spend less time on single icons and look more to outstanding ones. So a very nice shaded one in a dark color might do good here but bad in "the wild". It might also give some interresting info about a possible relations between amount of plays and place on the page (first few vs last few / center vs edges)

Would be nice if the icons were shown above the instructions rather than below. My vertical screen res isn't large enough on my laptop so I have to scroll down every time to vote. Makes it quite a chore.

Nice, time to get voting.

Agreed with Tigga about scrolling down. Also, have you changed the data that shows up in our games pages? I changed one of my icons to see how it would affect the hotness rating, but it is still displaying the old hotness rating on the game page.

The links for the middle and bottom 100 on the page are actually the link for the top 100; i.e. all the links point to the top 100.

I don't understand why people waste their and your time doing these kinds of things. What's the point in uploading a game with a title like that? Surely they know that as soon as the admins see it they'll delete it... whoever did that must have the maturity level of a spastic kangaroo.

Thats not really fair to the spastic kanagroos...

Anyway, the links seem to be borked on the vote page. The top 100 are also the middle 100 and also the worst 100...

*EDIT* Perhaps shorten the text a bit, so I don't have to scroll down to see each time it loads the page, or make it load auto on the bottom.

Speaking of weird icons, last time I've seen one that simply took FGL's "Community Level 1" icon as their game's logo. Talk about lacking effort, haha.

Heh, that game is my test application for when I'm debugging problems :)

Also, I just changed over the ratings at the bottom of your game view pages. They won't show experiment-1 data anymore; now they will show data from experiment 2.
